We are pleased to introduce you to Michael Grace Wines, a small winery run by myself, Michael, and my wife, Grace – hence the name. We set out to create wines that are thoroughly enjoyable, flavorful but not overpowering, light on alcohol content, handmade and modestly priced. By doing most of the work ourselves, we believe we can remain true to producing a handcrafted, limitedly supplied wine that can be enjoyed during a casual meal or a special occasion. We specialize in the unique wines of the Southern Rhone area of France.
Our first release, bottled in May 2004 was a 2001 Santa Barbara County Syrah. It was a huge success, winning a Silver Medal at the West Coast Wine Competition. Our wines were so well received that Michael Grace was the only wine poured at the 2004 American Film Institute (AFI) Film Festival in Los Angeles.
Although our label is new, our winemaking is steeped in traditional techniques that have produced premium quality wines across the centuries. We ferment our wine in small 1/2 to 1 ton bins; remove seeds, and separate grape skins from free run juice. The skins are pressed and barreled separately then blended back in to attain the desired balance of tannins, color, and flavor. After 24 - 30 months of aging in French oak barrels, our wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Our winemaking philosophy is simple Good grapes make good wine, and winemaking, like composing, whether music or art, is uniquely distinct from one composition to another. With an abundance of varietals, in distinct micro-climates and terrior in Santa Barbara County, the possibilities are nearly endless for crafting one of a kind wines that may be enjoyed upon release or cellared for future enjoyment. While Vintage years may see changes in varietal and/or style, quality is our primary objective.
We are quite proud of all our wines and hope you will find them to be as enjoyable to drink as they were to make.
